The Tembusu (Fagraea fragrans) is a large evergreen tree in the family Gentianaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia. Its trunk is dark brown, with deeply fissured bark, looking somewhat like a bittergourd. It grows in an irregular shape from 10 to 25m high. Its leaves are light green and oval in shape. Its yellowish flowers have a distinct fragrance and the fruits of the tree are bitter tasting red berries, which are eaten by birds and fruit bats. Source: Tembusu, Wikipedia

Dr. Kuan Yee Han received his B.Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, from the National University of Singapore. During his undergraduate days, he was active in the NUS Students’ Union, where he was elected President. He spent one year working as part of the NUS Overseas College Program in Silicon Valley in a medical device start-up, Voyage Medical, Inc. which focused on cardiovascular engineering. That shaped his interest in pursuing medtech engineering. His Ph.D. research focused on understanding blood-flow hemodynamics and properties through mechanical heart valves. He has been with Tembusu College since the pilot program as a Graduate Fellow while completing his Ph.D. Upon graduation, he held a joint appointment at Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Program (A*STAR) as a research and development scientist for over a year, where his project focused on designing a medical device for end-stage renal disease patients.

Yee Han’s teaching interests lie in the topics on negotiation and ageing. He brings together complementary pedagogies of experiential learning and authentic learning in his role as an educator.
