SLE 4

Senior Learning Experience (SLE) 4

The Senior Learning Experience Mentoring Programme (SLE4) is a one semester certificate-bearing learning opportunity that supports Year 4 students acting as a role model and leader in the interdisciplinary Tembusu College learning community. Year 4 students work with their Fellow Mentor to identify a group within the College who they can mentor.  Viable groups include: students in a Junior Seminar class; an SLE 3 student project group; a House Committee.

SLE4 students develop a mentorship Plan, deliver and evaluate their Plan and develop interdisciplinary connections in the process. They also lead on the organisation of one Group Meeting for the Senior Learning Experience Project (SLE3). Over the course of the semester their role as a Student Mentor is cultivated, overseen and developed by a Fellow Mentor, with a particular focus on starting up, advising and evaluating the Year 4 Student Mentorship. Three larger group meetings create a broader Student Mentor community and cultivate peer interaction, support and learning. The Programme is graded internally in the College.

“For my SLE4 mentorship programme, I peer-mentored UTS2105: Singapore a a ‘Model’ City? while concurrently studying effective feedback strategies. This experience introduced me to a different realm of pedagogical academic journals and provided structured guidance on conducting peer consultations.Through this process, I learned that mentorship involves extensive behind-the-scenes work—coordinating efforts and conducting research to ensure that interventions are genuinely effective.”

“Over the course of the mentorship, it’s been fulfilling to learn as much as I am teaching my juniors, and for everyone to grow together in different ways. One highlight was using my student leadership experiences within the College to guide my juniors to hone their problem-solving skills and self-confidence as leaders themselves.”

Supporting Year 1 UTCP Students to Read Critically

“Learning to engage an academic text effectively is a core skill for all university students but it is not an easy process. As part of the SLE4programme, I mentored students from a Junior Seminar class through reading sessions in which we got together to discuss an assigned book. By engaging with pedagogy and my own past experiences, I was able to impart the skills and methods to navigate an academic text, as well as the broader course. The SLE4 not only presented me an opportunity to continue participating and giving back to the college community. As an aspiring teacher, the SLE4 also provided a great avenue for my self-development and learning and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in it.”

“Participating in the Senior Learning Experience 4 has truly been an exceptional journey for me. Working with a teaching fellow and mentoring students in their Senior Seminar has been both a privilege and a valuable opportunity. Not only have I been able to make meaningful contributions to the Tembusu community, but this experience has also helped me hone a plethora of transferable skills essential for the workplace. Effective communication stands out as a key asset refined during this endeavor, for I am constantly challenged to convey complex ideologies in a manner that is palatable for students who are new to the subject.”
