Zohar Lederman has studied philosophy in Israel, medicine in Italy, and is now a PhD candidate at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics, National University of Singapore. Zohar’s dissertation focuses on the ethics of One Health and infectious diseases. One Health, a novel biomedical approach, is the collaborative multidisciplinary effort to improve the well-being of non-human animals as well as human and to preserve the ecosystem.
In this talk, Zohar will discuss and challenge a common claim made by a certain group of bioethicists: that Asian, or Eastern bioethics is fundamentally different from ‘Western’ bioethics. These bioethicists, often calling themselves ‘familists’, make two claims: The first, descriptive claim, is that family values take precedence over all other values in Asia. This stands in stark contrast to the ‘West,’ where individual values are the most important. The second, normative claim, is that in Asia, familyvalues should take precedence over all other values. Consequently, familists call for the creation of a separate discipline: Asian Bioethics. Zohar will challenge both claims. Cultural tolerance yes, cultural relativism no.
