We are working on a book about obsession with dramatic revelations. The claim that the Apollo Moon Landings were faked is an excellent case. Some people argue that if you look at the original videos and photos closely, they ‘reveal’ that the landings were faked. For us, the interesting question is not: “who’s right and who’s wrong?” or “how can the same evidence lead to radically different interpretations?” Rather, it is: what can we learn from this case to understand the pull of revelation in social and political life? Such revelation involves making secrets known, and making previously hidden aspects of the world accessible to all. In this seminar, we will discuss the merits of this new question. We also address the challenge of trying to say something different about a phenomenon that is usually discussed in the same way.

Tembusu Alumni, Tan Ming Jiang & Youk Keunhee, win at SMRT & NUS Enterprise hackathon

From the 29th till the 31st of August, this year, Youk Keunhee and Tan Ming Jiang — both alumni of Tembusu College — alongside 2 other teammates participated in a hackathon organized by SMRT & NUS Enterprise. This being their first hackathon, they joined with the hope of learning more about hacking for solutions. As part of the contest, they were given problem statements by SMRT in five categories — Buses, Trains, Taxis, Commercial and Open — and had to solve any one of these over that weekend. Since the issue of taxis is very close to their hearts, their group decided to devote their energies to that problem.

Even though neither Keunhee nor Ming Jiang are coders, they pitched in not just in the technological aspects, but also in the marketing aspects. All of their work culminated in a 3 minute presentation of their prototype. The results of their work will soon be felt by us all, as the group will soon be working together with SMRT on implementing their idea.

My doctoral dissertation aims to explain the increasing use of animal parts in ‘Chinese medicine’. Bear bile has been touted by Chinese pharmaceutical companies as effective for a number of ailments. Despite such claims, bear farming has become increasingly controversial in the last few decades. Outside China, endangered species are dwindling to be used for these purported healing properties. This project is the first academic attempt to reveal the origins of animal-based medicines. My working thesis is that Mao Zedong’s aim to build a pharmaceutical industry contributed to the rise in animal farming for medicinal purposes, a story I follow the 1980’s.
