The Untold Story of Your Success

Venue has changed to Master’s Common Lounge

Abstract:

During the course of our lives we get lots of advice about how to be successful. “Get good grades.” “Go to a good school.” “Study a practical major,” and so on and so forth, but what is the value of this advice, and how do we sort through it to map a course for the life that we would like to live? This talk examines how the widespread availability of low- or no-cost information empowers us all and how the stories we tell ourselves are crucial elements in what we think, feel, and do. The talk starts with the case of Jack Andraka, a 14-year old inventor who came up with a new means of detecting pancreatic cancer. It considers other young entrepreneurs and those who are able to formulate and live their dreams at an early age. Active and experiential learning exercises help demonstrate the power of reframing and rewriting personal narratives or stories in ways that serve a person’s goals and aspirations. The talk concludes with a discussion of the practice of journaling as a way to notice, reflect, and tell the story of your future success.

14th March 2013

Topic: Universalizing Health Care in Wartime China, 1938-1945

Speaker: Wayne Soon

Register at: dev-tembusu-nus.pantheonsite.io

Abstract:

East Asian polities have moved towards universal health care systems in recent years. Yet, many of the precedence emerged during the Second World War, and that those who favored such a system were Overseas Chinese and American doctors working in China.

At the heart of this enterprise was Robert Lim, a Singaporean-born and Edinburgh-trained doctor who creatively adapted imported blood banking equipment, delousing techniques, and nutrition programs to wartime Chinese conditions to institutionalize western medicine in China. These initiatives resulted in the treatment of more than three million soldiers, and the training of more than 15,000 military personnel, even as their efforts could not change longstanding medical practices and understanding of the blood and body as easily.

Because of cold war concerns, these transnational efforts during the war have been forgotten. Yet, they provide an important legacy to understand health care reforms in 21st Century China and Taiwan.

Managing a managed life; imaginative ethics in our technological age

Speaker: Dr. Adam Groves

Register at: dev-tembusu-nus.pantheonsite.io

Abstract:

What does it mean to be ‘liberated’ by technology? Giro payments, online shopping,

Endless selections of media and computerized games suggest that we are set free.

However, when the movie ends we have yet another to watch, another game to conquer or friend to chat with on increasingly flatter 3D screens. Work should become easier, yet we are working even more. Technology brings an opening in life, but does it not also bring a peculiar chaos?

Unlike the stereotypical idea of a poet, my research examines the every day poetic reality in our technologically ordered lives. What is the connection between poetic awareness and a high tech world? Ironically, poetic sense is part of an ordering of technological chaos.

I will address conceptualizations of the poet and the poetic, to understand the everydayness of poetic sensibility. For example, what is meant by “poetic justice” and “poetic license” ? Then I will discuss ideas of order and chaos as part of the ethical and social order of our technological age.

Picture: The Three Hairy Men (from left: Nafis, Angus & Omar) with Prof. Greg Clancey, Master of Tembusu College, after their win.

The College would like to congratulate the “Three Hairy Men” for their victory in the Intercollegiate Debate Shield Finals. Pitted against an equally talented team from the University Scholars Programme (USP), the team rallied hard to bring home the shield in what was a fiery debate riddled with humour, charisma and emotion.

The University Town Intercollegiate Debate Shield is in its second year running, with the previous holders being the University Scholars Programme.
